What 844 tells you

Nothing about the caller. The seven toll-free codes (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888) are not in the CNAC or NANPA prefix records. A number is assigned to whoever rents it, business or scammer, and the display can be spoofed like any other. Compare the number with the one printed on the organisation's own site before calling back.

How to check a phone number

A reverse phone lookup shows the number's original prefix assignment and any reports available here. It does not identify the person calling. Enter the full ten-digit number, including the area code, to see the records for that number rather than just its block.

  1. Check the city or exchange and carrier in the original assignment record. The line type is an estimate based on the carrier's name.
  2. Read any visitor reports and regulator complaints, including their dates and descriptions. Separate what someone reported from what the numbering record establishes.
  3. If the caller claims to represent a business or agency, find its contact number on a website, statement or card you already trust and contact it independently.

Sources behind the lookup

The lookup combines official prefix records with reports about individual numbers. Because these sources answer different questions, an assigned prefix and a consumer complaint should be read separately.

SourceWhat it shows
CNAC / NANPAThe exchange, carrier and status of the original number block, rather than the identity of today's caller.
Visitor reportsCategories, comments and dates supplied by people who used this site. These statements are not verified.
Regulator complaintsAvailable FCC or FTC consumer complaint counts and dates. A complaint is an allegation, not a finding of fraud.

Risks and limitations

Caller ID can be spoofed, so even a real local number may be displayed by someone else. Numbers can also be ported between carriers; the original assignment does not establish the current carrier or location. Toll-free codes are shared by Canada and the US and do not identify a city.

No reports means no reports are available here, not that a caller is safe. Do not send money, passwords or verification codes based on a lookup result. Read how caller ID spoofing works before deciding whether to call back.
